A man and a woman aged 26 and 28 have been sent for immediate trial over a fire that broke out near woodland at Kornos after they were seen letting off fireworks, and will stay in custody until the case is heard.
The Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court will sit on October 21. The prosecution asked for the two to be remanded, their lawyers objected, and the court rejected the objection.
The pair face conspiracy to commit a felony, arson in a forest, attempted arson, and negligent and reckless acts.
Kofinou police station investigated and found the two had bought fireworks from a kiosk at Kornos, police said. They lit three of them a few metres from the kiosk and the fire caught in grass in a forest area. According to information, the two told officers they had set them off for fun.
A local couple stopped the fire spreading. They saw two people lighting fireworks near the woods at 7pm on Sunday, August 2, got out of their car and challenged them, and the two got into a car and drove off, according to their account.
The couple put the fire out and photographed the car, which led to the arrests. The two accused live and work in Limassol and are from Brazil.
