A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Larnaca’s Permanent Criminal Court for murdering a 22-year-old student in Kofinou in June after luring him to a meeting with a fake job offer.

He was convicted on his own admission of the premeditated murder of Shahruar Ahmed Emon, which carries a life sentence, and the other charges against him were suspended.

The two men met on a bus on June 7, when the student asked him for work. According to the killer, he then asked the student for a wifi hotspot, but the student refused and insulted him. “No, you’re poor, you came from the occupied areas,” the student told him, according to his account.

That angered him, according to his confession, and he began planning the murder, buying a knife to carry it out.

On June 11, the killer contacted Emon and falsely told him he had found him a job paying 50 euros a day. They met that evening near the migrant reception centre in Kofinou.

As they walked towards the Kofinou slaughterhouse, the killer took out the knife he had bought and attacked Emon, inflicting three cuts to the right shoulder blade area and one to the left side of the neck. When he realised Emon was still alive, he strangled him.

The killer also took Emon’s mobile phone and used it to demand 35,000 euros from Emon’s relatives, supposedly for his release.

Emon’s body was found in Kofinou on Sunday, June 21.
