Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades reassured the public on Thursday regarding flight safety despite potential disruptions to GPS systems caused by Israel in its conflicts with Lebanon and Palestine.

His comments came during a press conference in Strovolos focused on the bus stop and shelter upgrade project.

When questioned about the Ministry’s response to the potential for digital and GPS interference, he acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are aware of the situation that has arisen. There is currently no technology to counter this directly, and it’s something we need to manage until the war ends.”

However, the Minister noted the resilience of air traffic control systems. He said that it’s important to highlight that pilots have alternative methods to navigate their flights without solely relying on GPS.

In April, Haris Antoniadis, head of Cyprus’s Air Traffic Control Service told omegalive that the country is experiencing GPS signal disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Citizens have also noted that map applications often mistakenly show their locations being in Lebanon, instead of Cyprus.
