A 38-year-old man who attacked police officers with a metal shovel while obstructing a mobile speed camera unit appeared in Limassol District Court on Thursday in poor health, testing positive for narcotics.

The defendant was assisted into court by police officers but did not appear before the judge, stating he felt unwell – apparently due to substance use – and at one point was found lying on the floor.

He faces charges of attacking a law enforcement officer, resisting lawful arrest, assault, public insult, carrying an offensive weapon and causing disturbance.

Police filed the case before the District Court with conditions set to ensure his appearance at trial. The case was scheduled for March 14.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. when a mobile speed camera operator alerted police about being obstructed by a driver during enforcement operations. Officers arrived at the scene where they located the 38-year-old man in his vehicle.

According to police, the man exited his vehicle upon noticing the officers’ presence, wielding a metal shovel and hurling insults. He then attacked the officers, injuring one in the leg. He was subsequently arrested and tested positive for drugs.
