The Larnaca district continues to grapple with illegal dumping, as evidenced by the discovery of numerous waste sites in the Koshi State Forest and along the old Nicosia-Larnaca road.
Lefteris Lambrou, the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation’s deputy provincial secretary in Larnaca, highlighted the severity of the issue, noting that the sites are littered with household appliances, sanitary ware, construction debris, and other waste materials. “These illegal dumps have likely been accumulating for years,” he stated, expressing deep concern.
Lambrou urged authorities to clean up the affected areas and implement measures to prevent future illegal dumping. “We expect the state and Parliament to legislate to tighten penalties, making them a deterrent to stop this situation,” he said.
The green party has reported the matter to the Department of the Environment, the Larnaca District Administration, and the Environment Commissioner, providing photographic evidence of the waste sites. Theodoulos Mesimeris, deputy director of the Department of the Environment, assured that the department would investigate the matter and coordinate with local authorities to address the issue.
A recent report revealed the extent of the illegal dumping problem in the Larnaca district, with some areas facing ecological risks due to waste sites located in Natura areas.
The scale of the issue is underscored by the fact that one-third (53) of the waste sites approved for funding in the #wastefreecyprus campaign are situated in the Larnaca region.
