Two hunters from Nicosia have been fined a combined €6,180 after Game and Fauna Service officers caught them hunting illegally in the Paphos district community of Miliou, in the standout case from the summer hunting season’s first crackdown.
The pair were hunting in a prohibited area close to homes on Sunday morning, using weapons that belonged to one of the two men. When officers located them again later that afternoon, one of the men was found with ten wood pigeons as game.
Each man was fined €2,000 for hunting in a prohibited area and a further €1,000 for illegally transporting hunting weapons. The man found with the wood pigeons received an additional €180 fine under legislation that imposes a €20 penalty for each bird beyond the first, bringing his total to €3,180, against €3,000 for the other man.
According to official figures released yesterday by Cyprus Police, 12 citations were issued during 300 checks carried out across Cyprus.
