Heat-related symptoms can arise even when under shade

Prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during heatwaves, can lead to various health issues, as explained by Assistant Professor of Pathology, Constantinos Tsioutis.

He emphasised that heat-related symptoms can arise from spending extended periods in hot environments or direct sun exposure, such as being outdoors or at the beach, or even indirectly when seeking shade.

Even with precautionary measures, high temperatures can still cause discomfort and temporary issues like dizziness, weakness, profuse sweating, and uneasiness.

For vulnerable individuals, including those with existing health conditions, taking certain medications, or belonging to specific groups like the elderly, pregnant women, and young children, even brief exposure to intense heat or sunlight can result in severe and prolonged health problems.

These range from mild symptoms of heat exhaustion to more serious conditions commonly known as heatstroke.

Heatstroke, as described by Prof. Tsioutis, presents with symptoms such as fever, extremely low blood pressure, intense dizziness leading to fainting, and tachycardia. It can also affect vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, and cardiovascular system.

In severe cases, individuals with heatstroke may require hospitalisation for proper management and faster recovery, especially if they fall within vulnerable groups.
