A puppy has been rescued from an open oil tank in Kyperounta, the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation reported on Monday.

According to a statement, the Fire Service responded to a citizen’s tip, successfully extracting the trapped animal. However, the party reports that other animals have previously died in the same tank.

Anthi Mouzouri, coordinator of the party’s animal action team, urged immediate action. “It’s imperative to close the tank as it’s a death trap for hundreds of animals and can also endanger humans,” she said. Mouzouri called on the mayor of Kyperounta to order the tank’s closure without delay.

The incident has highlighted a widespread issue, with the party stating that Cyprus is “dotted with open tanks and pits”. They’ve appealed to local authorities to address these hazards and encouraged citizens to report such dangers to municipal offices or the party itself.

Mouzouri expressed gratitude to the Fire Service for their animal rescue efforts, noting this was not an isolated incident in the area.

The rescued puppy, described as “traumatised and exhausted”, is now recovering at a veterinary clinic.
