The incident happened early last evening when the prison guard noticed the man acting suspiciously near the area and subsequently approaching the grounds.
Police had earlier received a report about the individual in question and alerted prison staff.
The guard fired two warning shots at around 2135 and officers from the local precinct rushed to the scene.
It was established that he was in Cyprus illegally.
He told authorities that he had crossed over from the occupied territories and intended to seek an asylum.
Following initial testimony and due process he was taken to the Pournara First Reception Centre in the Kokkinotrimithia area.
