Greens condemn ‘torture’ of horses and donkeys in Cyprus

The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has accused authorities of failing to protect horses and donkeys from appalling living conditions.

In an announcement on Thursday, the party’s animal action team said the creatures are being subjected to “torture” by being left tied up in fields without adequate food, water, or shelter.

The announcement was prompted after pictures showing a horse unattended in scorching temperatures in Paphos went viral on social media.

“It is inconceivable that these beautiful animals are being tortured and that we observe behaviours reminiscent of condemnable practices of past eras,” said Anthi Mouzouri, coordinator of the group.

The party is urging the public to report cases of animal cruelty to the police and veterinary services. They are also calling for tougher penalties for those found guilty of mistreating animals.

“The immediate application of the law and the referral of those who break the law and mistreat animals to Justice is the right approach,” Mouzouri added. “When the law is not enforced, nothing will change.”
