Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos will attend an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels later this month, diplomatic sources told the Cyprus News Agency. The meeting, scheduled for 29 August, will take place as a working lunch.
The Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, has also been invited to the gathering, though he has yet to confirm his attendance. If he accepts, it is expected that Kombos and Fidan will have the opportunity to engage in direct discussions.
Originally planned to take place in Budapest, the meeting was relocated to Brussels in response to controversial actions and statements by the Hungarian government, which currently holds the EU Council presidency. The move was announced by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell following concerns over Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s visits to Kyiv, Moscow, and Beijing, which were framed as peace initiatives, as well as comments made by the Hungarian Foreign Minister at the United Nations.
