Relevant News

Cypriot TikToker Nikos Peletie is being investigated for offences relating to sexism and incitement to violence following complaints from women’s rights organisations.

Peletie was arrested, questioned and charged in connection with the alleged offences after complaints were filed by the Socialist Women’s Movement and the Pan-Cypriot Federation of Women’s Organisations (POGO).

According to information obtained by philenews, the case file will soon be completed and subsequently forwarded to the Law Office for study and guidance.

Background to the case

The matter arose last April following a post or video by Nikos Peletie on a social media platform. At the time, the Socialist Women’s Movement issued a statement saying it had filed complaints with the Radio and Television Authority, the Committee for Journalistic Ethics, the Police and the Attorney General’s Office regarding Peletie’s post on an electronic platform of a Cypriot news outlet, as well as on social media.

According to the complaint, the post in question reproduces sexist discourse that contravenes specific provisions of the code regarding adverse and gender-based discrimination.

The organisation had lodged complaints across multiple platforms, citing concerns that the content violated established guidelines on gender equality and appropriate public discourse.
