A section of the Amathus Riverbed in Germasogeia is undergoing transformation into a Linear Park designed to offer rest, recreation, and fitness opportunities to its users.

The estimated cost of the project is €2.8 million, and the works are expected to be completed 12 months after obtaining the necessary permits.

This proposed redevelopment is part of a larger project aimed at creating a model Linear Park approximately 6km long, which will connect Limassol’s coastal front with the Germasogeia Dam.

The project is divided into three phases, and the exact timeline for their implementation is not yet determined. The Municipality of Germasogeia intends to gradually complete the entire project in the coming years.

The project has been reviewed by the Environmental Authority, which decided to proceed with issuing a reasoned opinion, stating no objection to the construction of the project under certain conditions and requirements set forth.

According to the Environmental Authority, the project is situated in a built environment currently used mainly as a parking area, and its usage will be altered to a Linear Park, incorporating more greenery, giving it a more natural appearance, and making it friendlier and more pleasant for users through the microclimate it aims to create.

The project is located within the Amathus Riverbed near the sea in a tourist area. It extends from the riverbed’s intersection with King George I Avenue (the southernmost point of the project) to the area of the riverbed’s intersection with Daidalidon Street (its northernmost boundary), with a total length of 291 metres and a width of approximately 33 metres.

According to the development proposal, the asphalt-sealed riverbed will be removed and reshaped with permeable materials.

Rainwater, in addition to being channelled through a drainage channel leading to the sea, will flow across the entire width of the riverbed, thus aiding in the enrichment and natural function of the riverbed.

A central, shallow open drainage channel will be created along the length of the project. Existing trees along the eastern and western sides of the project will be preserved, and greenery will be enhanced by planting new local species of trees, shrubs, and plants.

New structures and stands will be positioned in such a way that they do not obstruct the smooth flow of water and will be resilient to flood phenomena.
