A hearing to determine the detention of a 49-year-old German citizen arrested on suspicion of property usurpation offences in the occupied north was adjourned on Monday due to language barriers.
The woman, arrested Sunday afternoon at Larnaca Airport, appeared before the Nicosia District Court for a detention request by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). However, the process stalled by 1:30 p.m. as no German translator was readily available.
According to reports, attempts to locate a suitable translator were unsuccessful. While the suspect’s lawyer offered to facilitate translation using technology, Judge Nicole Grigoriou prioritised ensuring the woman’s constitutional rights were upheld.
The hearing was adjourned at least twice to confirm the suspect’s consent to proceed in Greek without translation.
