Four-year-old Marios died on Friday, August 21, at Makarios Hospital after several weeks of treatment for viral meningitis and a serious deterioration in his health.

The child had developed cerebral oedema and had been declared brain dead, remaining in the intensive care unit for weeks. The case had caused strong public emotion and reaction after his family raised complaints about how it was initially handled.

The four-year-old’s ordeal

Marios’s ordeal began in early July, when he contracted viral meningitis and his health deteriorated rapidly. He developed serious complications, including cerebral oedema, and needed treatment in the intensive care unit at Makarios Hospital, where he remained for weeks.

He was later declared brain dead. At the same time, his family lodged complaints over what they described as mishandling, delays and omissions in his initial treatment, calling for a full investigation and for responsibility to be established where it was found.

Police and internal investigations into the case began, and on August 10 relatives and members of the public held a protest outside Limassol General Hospital. Marios died on August 21, after a lengthy fight to stay alive.

Investigations ongoing

Police and internal investigations into the case are under way, aimed at examining the conditions of the child’s hospital treatment and the complaints that have been raised. The investigation is continuing now that the four-year-old has died.

As a mark of respect for Marios’s family, Kourion Municipality, in coordination with the Trachoni Municipal District, announced the cancellation of the music event that was part of the Kourion Festival 2026, which had been scheduled for August 21 in Trachoni. The child’s family maintains close ties with the local community, the municipality said, as his mother worked at the Trachoni Municipal District until recently.

The municipality expressed its deepest condolences to Marios’s family, noting that the event will take place on a new date, to be announced later.
