Age limit and cost

Anyone over 18 in Cyprus can apply to change their legal gender and name under the procedures set by the Republic of Cyprus. The application carries an €80 fee.

The procedure requires a written application in the form of a letter or curriculum vitae, accompanied by a sworn statement to the Registrar. Applicants can attach medical certificates such as proof of hormone therapy if they wish, but this is not mandatory.

Applications are submitted to the relevant Registrar (District Administration), whilst people living abroad can apply through the relevant diplomatic authority of the Republic of Cyprus (embassy or consulate).

The correction of registered gender cannot be carried out more than twice, and all applications are examined with respect for personal data protection.

Issuing new documents

After approval of the gender and name change, the person’s current official documents from the Republic are cancelled, and they must immediately apply for new ones with their updated details.

The relevant procedures and necessary forms are available through a special link on the competent service’s website.

Applications for new documents must be submitted only after approval of the gender change request, not simultaneously with it. When submitting applications, applicants must present their old documents for cancellation.

The competent services stress that all procedures and requests concerning gender correction and issuing of new documents are handled with absolute confidentiality within the framework of personal data protection.
