Fake doctor scam on the rise, as pensioners targeted

Relevant News

Police have warned the public to be vigilant against calls by fraudsters who introduce themselves as doctors and mostly try and steal large sums of money from pensioners, asking them for cash or cheques for the urgent care of one of their relatives.

Authorities received a spate of new complaints and have once again warned people to look out for such calls and particularly protect their elderly parents or other loved ones from such crooks.

The individuals in question usually attempt to scam people who live alone or in remote areas, saying that a relative either needs an immediate operation or some other form of medical intervention for which they require a massive sum of money.

In certain cases they call from so called ‘Private Numbers’ and ask their potential victims not to interrupt the call, as this is a matter of medical emergency, so the scammed cannot communicate with the relative in question, anyone else or the police.

Police are re-launching an appeal for people who receive such calls to immediately notify authorities by communicating with the closest precinct, local CIDs or the Citizen’s Hotline on 1460.
