“Our involvement as teenagers and young people in issues concerning the European Union is essential because we will take over its administration in a few years and we must realize that our skills and ideas are the basic foundations for creating a better tomorrow for future generations”, wrote in a note for Phileleftheros Andrea Vassiliadou, a student of the first grade of the Lyceum of Latsia.
In a note of his own, her classmate at the same school George Libertis expressed the belief that “every European should leave behind his egoistic and nationalistic beliefs and fight for the common good as a citizen of a great state, of a united Europe, which is multicultural, but if you observe it from above, you will see harmony and peace!”
Andreana and George are two of the six “ambassador cadets” of the Lyceum of Latsia who participate in the European Parliament Ambassador School program.
A reference to this European project was made in an open discussion in the school’s auditorium entitled “The European Union through the eyes of the young generation”, organized on December 15, 2023, by the Reflection Group for the Modernization of our Society.
During this very successful event, the students, with maturity and critical thinking and in a climate of fruitful dialogue, expressed their views focusing on the 20th anniversary of Cyprus’ accession to the European Union and the upcoming European elections on 9 June 2024.
The debate took place in the framework of the European program “WeTogether” which aimed to strengthen citizens’ participation in European public life and to promote the importance of European identity for all citizens and voting in the upcoming European elections.
During the event, the online European platform together.eu was also presented, inviting citizens to play an active role in the democratic process and to determine the future of Europe through their vote.
