Etek calls for prompt implementation of building safety checks in view of recent quakes

The Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (Etek) has sent a letter to the Public Works Department calling for the prompt implementation of building safety checks – starting with those of wide public use.

With the Turkey-Syria earthquake serving as a stark reminder of the dangers, Etek warned that Cyprus’ ageing housing and building stock is at serious risk from earthquakes and severe weather events.

This is what Philenews reported on Wednesday, adding that over 200,000 buildings recorded in the last census have been built before the implementation of any anti-seismic regulations.

Etek’s letter also refers to the lack of maintenance of many buildings and the fact that no systematic checks are carried out on their structural adequacy. And it underlined that the competent authorities are responsible to take action and focus on public buildings as a first step.

Etek’s head Constantinos Constantis said they are asking for information on the structural condition of public buildings and the plan for a new inspection and structural upgrade.

“We are not only referring to the public buildings but also to those, government or private, where citizens come and go to carry out tasks, to work, to be entertained, to shop, to receive medical treatment, to socialize, etc..,” he also said.

“Inspections should also be carried out at sports venues, churches and generally where relatively large numbers of people gather,” he added.
