Emergency solution after recycling problems

Relevant News

Green Dot, Cyprus’s waste management organisation, has implemented emergency measures to handle recyclable materials following processing issues, the company said on Wednesday.

The firm diverted paper waste from Limassol and Paphos provinces to C.E.I. Cyprus Environmental Industries Ltd after learning that the Barracuda facility, which typically handles waste from these areas, was unable to accept materials.

Concurrently, PMD (plastic, metal, and drink cartons) recyclables from the same provinces were sent to Enerco, a facility associated with Vasiliko Cement Works, for energy recovery.

Unlike the Koshi landfill site, which processes PMD waste from Nicosia, Larnaca, and Famagusta provinces and recycles about 15% of materials, the Pentakomos landfill does not offer recycling services.

Green Dot confirmed that as of today, all waste materials will resume processing at the licensed facility in Limassol.

These emergency measures follow a July 2023 fire that destroyed the Ecobalance waste management facility in the Geri industrial area, which previously handled PMD recyclables. Since then, PMD materials have been directed to the Koshi landfill as a temporary solution.
