Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, has reiterated the need for secondary school students to keep their mobile phones switched off and in their bags during school hours, citing concerns over online gambling and social development.

Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to the Cyprus University of Technology, Michaelidou addressed a recent incident where a student’s mobile phone exploded during a break. She emphasised that the issue extends beyond education to mental and physical health.

“We must finally follow other countries and not wait for it to be imposed on us later,” Michaelidou said, adding that the ministry aims to help students socialise during breaks and be more productive in classrooms.

The minister expressed alarm over reports of students engaging in online gambling during school breaks, reinforcing her stance on mobile phone restrictions.

Despite advocating for limits on personal device use, Michaelidou affirmed the ministry’s support for integrating new technologies in lessons, noting that devices have already been placed in schools.

During her university visit, Michaelidou met with Rector Panagiotis Zaphiris and discussed the institution’s building programme. She highlighted the government’s ongoing support for upgrading and expanding the Cyprus University of Technology over the past 18 months.

Addressing student concerns, Michaelidou acknowledged that housing and high rents were the most pressing issues. She indicated that there are plans to construct student hostels and pledged support through various means.
