With the start of the island’s new school year just days away the Education Minister has assured once again that the long-standing issue of air-conditioning units in schools will be tackled.

And that the installation of units in classrooms will be based on a specific plan aiming to primarily ensure specific criteria related to safety, Philenews reported on Thursday.

Education Minister Athena Michaelidou met with POED and OELMEK unions on Wednesday afternoon to assess the state of play in view of the start of the new school year in September.

“So, the safety of our children is above all. And with this as a given and specific instructions to be sent to all school departments we start – as from the following few months – the installation of air conditioning units in classrooms as well,” she said.

“Even though several air conditioning units have already been installed in other areas of schools,” she added.

Union representatives sent the message that the Ministry has tabled a specific plan and timetable for the installation of air conditioning units.

But, they noted, there are still some issues to be clarified concerning the criteria on the basis of which the installation of units will begin.
