DISY suspends two mayors from party bodies over abuse investigations

DISY’s Executive Bureau has unanimously suspended two mayors from the party’s collective bodies whilst their Interior Ministry-imposed leave of absence remains in effect.

The decision, taken at the party’s regular session, applies to Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos and occupied Lefkoniko mayor Pieris Gypsiotes. Both will remain suspended from the party’s collective bodies until their leave ends.

In an official statement, DISY said investigations belong exclusively to investigative authorities and the justice system, adding that every citizen is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

According to sources, party officials at Pindarou Street headquarters had debated whether to take formal action to signal that the matter concerns the party and to demonstrate determination.

The party reiterated its position: “Investigate everything and everyone, for all charges. Transparency everywhere, oversight on everything, zero tolerance for anything improper.”

The decision now raises questions about MP Nikos Sykas’s status. The party previously decided to remove him from its ballot, but he remains a party member, sits on its collective bodies, and continues to serve as an MP.
