Dead cattle transferred to burial site despite farmer protest in Palaiometocho

The transfer of dead animals to a burial site designated by Veterinary Services in the Palaiometocho area has been completed, despite a protest by around 50 farmers who briefly blocked roads in the area on Monday afternoon in an attempt to stop it, police sources said.

The farmers blocked roads leading mainly towards the buffer zone, seeking to prevent dead cattle from being transported to the burial site. They expressed fears that the transfer posed a risk of spreading foot-and-mouth disease, as livestock units are located along the route.

The protest ended without incident or complaints, according to police.

“They are burying the animals without protocols. The people who are shouting are right,” said Stella Petrou, spokesperson for the farmers’ association I Foni ton Ktinotrofon (Voice of Farmers). “Dead animals cannot pass by livestock units,” she added.

Petrou said the association met with Veterinary Services on Monday. She added that the association will issue a public statement after today’s meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment with Minister Maria Panayiotou.
