The Fire Service have issued an urgent appeal for public vigilance to prevent wildfires as high-risk conditions intensify across the island.
Officials are calling on the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid activities that could potentially spark blazes during this critical period.
The warning specifically targets the use of tools or agricultural machinery that generate heat, sparks or flames, including angle grinders, oxygen welding, electric welding and similar equipment.
The public is also cautioned against discarding lit cigarette butts or other hot objects in open areas.
Authorities stress that “particular attention must be given to preventive measures” to avoid fires caused by the exhausts of various generators or water pumps in rural areas.
The announcement reminds the public that burning grass, pruned branches and waste is prohibited, and that lighting fires anywhere is forbidden except for food preparation in specially permitted and designated areas.
Anyone who notices smoke or fire is urged to telephone immediately either the European emergency number 112 or the Cyprus Forest Department’s hotline 1407.
