Construction has begun on the Cyprus University of Technology’s School of Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development in Larnaca, a project budgeted at 10,934,000 euros and due to be completed in August 2028.
The site, behind the large car park at Mackenzie beach, has been fenced off and work is already under way. The President of the Republic will lay the foundation stone on 30 October.
One of the school’s departments, Sustainable Development, is expected to start operating in 2027, housed in the Larnaca Municipality’s Multipurpose Centre for Social Welfare and Employment.
The university’s rector, Panayiotis Zaphiris, told journalists that the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA) is scheduled to evaluate the Sustainable Development programme on 12 November. If the accreditation process is completed, the first students will start in Larnaca in September 2027.
Zaphiris said work was currently under way to recruit staff, finalise curricula and address issues relating to infrastructure, student welfare and housing.
The mayor of Larnaca said again that the municipality intends to build student halls of residence next to the new school. He added that it has acquired other large plots of land, intended for affordable rental housing, and will consider whether they could also be used for student halls.
