Newly installed security cameras at a Larnaca school were vandalised shortly after installation, but not before capturing footage of the perpetrators, local education officials said on Wednesday.
Yianna Nicolaou, chairwoman of the Larnaca School Board, told the parliamentary education committee that police are close to identifying the young suspects using footage obtained before the cameras were damaged.
“We’re now ordering cages to protect the cameras”, Nicolaou said, adding that authorities are implementing additional security measures, including special protective enclosures for future camera installations.
The incident has prompted officials to review security measures for surveillance equipment at schools across the district.
