Residents from Dhekelia refugee housing estate and Ormideia community will protest this Sunday against pollution from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power station, citing serious health concerns.
The demonstration is scheduled for 11 a.m. outside the EAC facilities in Dhekelia.
Ormideia community leader Antonis Fotis told reporters that Ormideia has the highest cancer mortality rate in Cyprus.
“The pollution from the power station’s emissions is severe. The old fuel oil-powered generators must be upgraded until a final decision on the station’s closure is made”, he said.
Fotis expressed frustration over shifting timelines for the plant’s closure, initially promised for 2023 but now delayed until 2029. “Even for that date, we have our doubts“, he said, calling for government explanations about the facility’s future.
The community leader said the EAC has faced multiple EU fines over environmental violations. He also raised concerns about British military base antennas in the Dhekelia area.
The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens Cooperation party has backed Sunday’s protest, demanding measures to improve residents’ quality of life and ensure EAC’s compliance with EU industrial emissions directives.
