Cyprus Police will launch a nationwide road safety campaign on Monday targeting motorists who use mobile phones or hold other objects while driving, an offence authorities say contributes significantly to fatal and serious road collisions.
The campaign will run from Monday, 24 August, until Sunday, 30 August 2026.
Traffic police will carry out roadside checks throughout the week, with particular emphasis on drivers using mobile phones or holding other objects behind the wheel. Officers will also inform the public about the risks associated with distracted driving.
Driver distraction is considered one of the main factors increasing the risk of a road collision because it significantly reduces reaction time, with mobile phone use playing a major role.
According to figures covering 2023 to 2025, careless and distracted driving was the leading cause linked to serious and fatal road injuries.
It was associated with 22.1% of road deaths and 29.4% of serious road injuries recorded during the three years.
