Police urge ban on away fans at high-risk football matches

Police have urged the country’s football association (CFA) to ban away supporters from three high-risk first division matches following repeated violent incidents this season, according to a letter seen by philenews on Wednesday.

Deputy Police Chief Panicos Stavrou called on the CFA to exercise its powers under Article 73(D) of the Prevention and Suppression of Violence at Sports Venues Law to “ensure the safe conduct of these matches and prevent worse incidents that we all wish to avoid”.

The proposed ban would affect three upcoming fixtures: Omonia 29th May versus Omonia, APOEL versus Apollon Limassol, and AEL versus Anorthosis.

Police cited multiple serious violent incidents during the 2024-25 season, including the use of dangerous items such as Molotov cocktails, marine flares, high-powered firecrackers, and various other pyrotechnics.

The letter emphasised that supporters of these teams have demonstrated behaviour that “causes or could cause violent incidents inside and outside sports venues” and potentially disrupt public order or the safe conduct of matches.

The CFA is expected to review the recommendation ahead of the upcoming fixtures.
