Cyprus launches digital ID application for citizens to store official documents

Cyprus has launched its new “Digital Citizen” mobile application today, marking what President Nikos Christodoulides called “a new era of digital services for citizens and businesses”.

The application, now available on Google Play and the App Store, allows citizens to obtain and store official documents in digital format for legal use within the country, the president said in a social media post.

In its initial phase, users can acquire digital versions of their identity cards, driving licences and vehicle roadworthiness certificates (MOT).

According to Christodoulides, this eliminates the need to carry physical documents.

“This is a crucial step towards our country’s digital transformation, aimed at creating a modern, user-friendly and efficient state”, the president wrote.

“Simplifying procedures, saving time and improving services are at the core of our efforts, ultimately aimed at enhancing the quality of life for all Cypriots”.

The app requires users to have an activated and verified CY Login profile, which serves as the common access mechanism for government systems and services. Two-factor authentication must also be enabled.

The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy has urged all organisations to immediately integrate acceptance of digital documents into their procedures.

A forthcoming announcement will specify an adaptation period before the acceptance of digital documents becomes mandatory.

Digital documents issued through the application can be verified securely through QR code scanning. However, these digital documents are not valid for international travel.

The government has launched a dedicated website, www.digital-citizen.gov.cy, offering comprehensive information about the application, including frequently asked questions and technical support services.
