Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in Cyprus from Wednesday, with flooding possible

A weather system expected to bring heavy rainfall and thunderstorms is forecast to reach Cyprus from the west on Wednesday afternoon, with conditions potentially remaining unsettled until Friday, according to an official from the Department of Meteorology.

The official said a clearer picture of the system’s development and expected path should be available on Monday.

The weather system appears set to develop around midnight on Wednesday, moving from the Ionian Sea towards mainland Greece before heading to the southern Aegean and eventually approaching Cyprus.

Asked whether the storms could bring large amounts of rainfall and cause flooding, the official acknowledged that thunderstorms could produce such conditions.

Until Wednesday, only scattered showers are expected, mainly in the mountains and possibly in inland and northern areas.

The system is expected to reach western Cyprus on Wednesday afternoon before spreading to other parts of the island.
