State to cover sewerage connection costs for 3,000 refugee homes

The Town Planning Department will cover sewerage connection costs for 3,000 refugee properties located in nine government settlements in the Limassol district, rather than requiring owners and tenants to pay.

The properties are situated in the self-housing settlements of Mouttagiaka, Agia Fyla, Upper Polemidia (Karmiotissa), Lower Polemidia self-housing (west of Nikaia Road), Lower Polemidia self-housing (east of Nikaia Road), and the government settlements of Agios Nikolaos, Ayios Ioannis, Agios Spyridon and Omonia settlement.

According to a memorandum submitted by Limassol’s District Local Government Organisation (EOA), construction work has been completed in the Omonia, Agios Spyridon settlements and Agia Fyla self-housing area.

Work is currently underway in the Ayios Ioannis settlement and the Upper and Lower Polemidia self-housing areas. Construction in the remaining settlements is expected to begin by autumn 2025.

The contract value for these projects amounts to €12.8 million plus VAT.

EOAs have now assumed responsibility for connecting the settlements’ central networks to the rest of the city.

The Deputy Mayor of Livadia told the Parliamentary Refugees Committee that residents received notification regarding sewerage charges, followed by a second notice imposing fines for non-payment of the initial fees.

The deputy mayor requested withdrawal of the imposed fines and recommended maintenance work on the 30-year-old system.

A Town Planning Department representative stated the department assumes construction costs for the central sewerage system in the settlements, whilst property owners are responsible for connection costs from residential units to the main network along roads.
