Firefighters rescued a cat from a burning apartment in Strovolos on Wednesday while the resident was away.
Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said two fire engines from Nicosia stations responded to the blaze in a first-floor apartment at 3:36 p.m.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the apartment and extinguished a fire that had started in a computer at a desk, Kettis said. The apartment was then ventilated.
The cat was safely rescued from inside the apartment, while the resident was not at home during the incident.
The fire caused extensive smoke damage to the paintwork and equipment throughout the apartment.
An investigation conducted jointly by the police, the Electromechanical Services Department and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus determined that the fire was caused by an electrical installation problem.
