Thousands of Cyprus residents face daily risks from faulty electrical equipment already installed in their homes, the head of the Cyprus Electrical Contractors Association warned.
“Many homes have problematic equipment that poses risks of short circuits, electrocution, or fire, but cannot be replaced as legislation doesn’t require regular inspections”, George Kyriakou, the association’s president, told philenews.
Most defective products are discovered only after installation and following consumer complaints, creating what Kyriakou described as a “time bomb” situation.
New legislation proposes mandatory safety inspections every two years for rental properties and every ten years for owner-occupied homes, officials said.
The association highlighted particular concerns about two-pin electrical devices sold in Cyprus, where three-pin sockets are standard, warning that high-power appliances operating through adaptors pose significant risks.
“The first inspection by the electricity authority during installation is considered sufficient under current law, but this isn’t adequate as many problematic products are identified only after installation”, Kyriakou said.
