The Council of Ministers has approved a bill significantly increasing penalties for using water hoses when washing vehicles, pavements and other surfaces, in an effort to protect the country’s water resources.
Andreas Gregoriou, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, told philenews that the legislation doubles on-the-spot fines from €50 to €100, with repeat offenders facing penalties of €300.
Maximum prison sentences will also double from three to six months, while the maximum financial penalty will increase sixfold from €500 to €3,000.
“We hope the bill will be passed by Parliament before its summer recess,” Gregoriou said.
