The Asylum Service is entering a new era with the construction of its new headquarters, a €12.438 million project (excluding VAT) that is progressing rapidly under the supervision of the Department of Public Works.

The new building, co-funded with €8.5 million from the Swiss Confederation, marks a milestone in efforts to strengthen asylum application management infrastructure in Cyprus.

The construction contract was awarded to A. Aristotelous Constructions Ltd on May 22, 2024, with work officially beginning on June 5, 2024. Completion is expected by December 5, 2026.

The contract includes a 12-year maintenance period, extending the contractor’s responsibility until December 2038, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the investment.

Today, the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection is holding a foundation stone ceremony in the presence of President Nikos Christodoulides, formally marking the beginning of construction.

The new three-storey building will have a total area of approximately 5,600 square metres, including a 2,400 sq.m basement, a 1,700 sq.m ground floor, and a 1,500 sq.m first floor.

The architectural design, developed by the Department of Town Planning and Housing, has been created to functionally and effectively serve the needs of the Asylum Service.

Beyond the building construction, the project includes demolition of existing infrastructure, installation of modern electrical, mechanical and electronic systems, and complete furnishing of the premises.

The plan also provides for extensive landscaping of the surrounding area, including tree planting, irrigation, construction of pavements, roads and parking spaces, as well as the erection of an Electricity Authority of Cyprus substation.

The pedestrian infrastructure around the site will also be upgraded to improve safety and accessibility.
