The owner of an advertising company, Kaan Ketenci, has been arrested in the occupied areas of Cyprus. He was wanted by Turkish authorities as part of a corruption investigation involving the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and its mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Ketenci is among 99 suspects being investigated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for serious offences, including “establishing and participating in a criminal organisation”, “extortion”, “bribery”, and “illegal possession of personal data”.

Ketenci had been sought as a fugitive. Following his arrest in the occupied areas, and the completion of the necessary procedures by the Financial Crimes Department of the Istanbul Police Department, he was brought before the City Court for the issuance of a detention order.

The case has triggered political reactions in Turkey, as Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul and a member of the opposition, has repeatedly claimed that the investigation is politically motivated.
