Cyprus Archbishop criticises Paphos Bishop’s “soft drinks are demonic” comment

The Archbishop of Cyprus, George, has expressed disappointment over Bishop Tychikos of Paphos’s refusal to receive a relic of St Paul from the Vatican, citing the latter’s view of the Pope as a heretic.

In public remarks following a visit to the Paphos Bishopric, Archbishop George questioned the bishop’s stance, particularly given that Tychikos had previously welcomed Roman Catholic Church representatives.

“I expected Paphos to maintain a higher religious standard,” the archbishop said. He called for the metropolitan to “adjust his position towards the people of Paphos and the Church”.

The archbishop also criticised recent statements by Tychikos declaring soft drinks “demonic” and opposing traditional memorial wheat offerings being served in cups, describing such positions as below the expected standards for Paphos.

Whilst denying any personal rift, Archbishop George suggested the relationship had deteriorated, stating he had previously misinterpreted Tychikos’s silence as humility rather than concealment of his true views.

Tychikos responded by saying he needed to speak privately with the archbishop, affirming his respect for him. Regarding the St Paul relic, he noted the matter dated back two years.

The archbishop indicated that resolution would require Tychikos to reverse his position and address the public in writing, though he expressed uncertainty about the impact of his guidance.
