Cyprus has reached a significant financial milestone, with its credit rating now firmly in the “A” category from all three major rating agencies—Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s. The latest upgrade by Standard & Poor’s was welcomed by President Nikos Christodoulides, who described it as a testament to the nation’s collective sacrifices and disciplined economic strategy.
In a written statement, President Christodoulides noted, “This achievement consolidates Cyprus among the most reliable economies in the European Union.” He added that the government, institutions, and citizens now expect banks to take advantage of the favourable conditions by reducing loan interest rates and narrowing the gap between deposit and lending rates.
A Collective Success
The upgrade marks the culmination of successive improvements in Cyprus’s credit profile. The president credited a government strategy focused on fiscal responsibility, investment promotion, financial stability, and structural reforms.
The move to the “A” category has far-reaching benefits, including:
- Lower borrowing costs for both the government and businesses, thanks to enhanced creditworthiness.
- Increased economic stability, fostering job security and higher wages.
- Strengthened public finances, allowing for greater investment in critical sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
- Boosted foreign investment, particularly in high-value industries, creating well-paid jobs.
“This recognition is a vote of confidence in the resilience and potential of our economy. It rewards the collective efforts of society, businesses, and citizens who have borne the burden of recovery and stabilisation,” Christodoulides stated.
Call to Action for Banks
The president urged financial institutions to align with the positive momentum by easing financial pressures on households and businesses. He emphasised that reducing loan rates would not only provide relief to thousands of families but also enhance liquidity and stimulate investment.
“This initiative would send a strong message of trust and solidarity, reinforcing the role of banks as allies in the country’s development,” he said.
Long-Term Commitment
The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding economic progress, strengthening social cohesion, and advancing targeted policy measures to ensure sustainable growth and improved living standards.
The triple upgrade, Christodoulides concluded, “is not only a validation of our efforts but also a responsibility to maintain and build upon these gains for the long-term prosperity of Cyprus.”
