Α financial crime unit team is currently investigating alleged criminal offences related to the Vasiliko liquified natural gas terminal project and specifically connected to the implementation of the work and the process by which the contract was awarded.

Police spokesperson Christos Andreou said that the three member team is under the supervision of the European Prosecutor’s Office, which first brought the issue of possible irregularities to the attention of local authorities.

Andreou further said that if the need arises due to the sheer volume of documents and testimony, additional members will join the team, which has already started going through relevant evidence received from the Auditor General’s Office.

No deadline has been set for the criminal investigation, but the general directive is that it should conclude at the soonest possible time.

The police spokesperson clarified that due to the nature of the on-going investigation and a directive from the European Prosecutor’s Office, in charge of the team, police will refrain from disclosing any further details in order to prevent any undue influence.
