President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday he hopes reports of a US-Iran agreement on a two-week ceasefire will be confirmed, describing de-escalation as a key objective.
“I want to genuinely express my hope that all of this is confirmed. De-escalation is a fundamental goal,” Christodoulides told journalists on the sidelines of the 16th Nicosia Economic Congress.
Cyprus has a particular interest in developments, he said, both because of its EU Council Presidency and because an informal European Council meeting is due to take place on the island in the days immediately following Easter — at which regional developments will feature prominently.
“We are watching very carefully what is being reported and we genuinely hope it is confirmed and achieves the goal of de-escalation,” he said. “This is the wish of the states of the region. That was the goal, and I hope it is confirmed.”
Christodoulides added that a potential de-escalation would be positive for Cyprus, its citizens, the wider region and the European Union.
