Cyprus is facing a paradox in its nursing sector, with high demand for staff coupled with a reluctance among top-scoring students to pursue the career, officials said on Wednesday.
The Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK/CUT) offers 150 spots annually in its Nursing Department, yet only about 30 are typically accepted, according to Vassilis Protopapas, Head of CUT’s Student Welfare and Academic Affairs Service.
Despite the programme’s high employment rate for graduates, many high-scoring candidates secure spots but ultimately choose not to enrol, Protopapas told philenews.
This year’s admissions saw exceptionally high scores, with the top candidate achieving 19.63 out of 20, and the lowest-ranked of the 150 spots scoring 16. The first 43 successful candidates all scored around 19.
