Borrell to discuss Middle East peace prospects at Nicosia conference

Relevant News

Outgoing EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, will be the keynote speaker today at an event in Nicosia organised by the non-governmental organisation “Two-State Coalition for Israel/Palestine”.

The Two-State Coalition, also known as the Geneva Initiative, is a joint effort by Israeli and Palestinian civil society organisations promoting an agreed solution to the Middle East conflict through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state coexisting alongside Israel.

According to an official statement, Borrell’s visit to the region amid the ongoing devastating situation in Gaza and military escalation in Lebanon provides an opportunity to continue discussions with regional partners about potential steps towards a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, and a longer-term process based on the two-state solution.

Borrell’s Middle East engagements began on Wednesday in Jordan, where he was received by King Abdullah II.

He continued his visit to Jordan on Thursday, and will travel to Lebanon on Sunday for bilateral meetings and discussions with United Nations representatives in the country.
