A 55-year-old basketball coach arrested last Wednesday has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor and released on conditional bail, with court orders prohibiting any contact with minors.
The case, filed late last week, involves serious charges beyond verbal abuse, according to an expert familiar with the matter.
The investigation moved swiftly following the initial complaint filed on November 1. A video-recorded statement from the minor, described by sources as crucial to the investigation, enabled police to obtain and execute an arrest warrant.
The suspect was subsequently detained for seven days following a court order.
The case has sparked concern within the basketball community, as the coach had faced a similar allegation previously.
Sources confirm an earlier identical complaint was filed, though that investigation did not progress after the minor was unable to provide a video-recorded statement.
“The presumption of innocence must always be respected. Being a suspect doesn’t equate to guilt. However, many in the sport were surprised that despite the well-known previous complaint about an identical incident, even though the investigation didn’t proceed, his team took no preventive measures”, said a prominent figure in the sport.
