Investigators await forensic clues from shell casings, stolen car in Ayia Napa murder attempt

Investigators in Ayia Napa are still awaiting forensic results in the attempted murder of a 33-year-old Greek Cypriot man, who was not injured in the attack.

Police believe the attack was intended to send a message to the man’s brother, a 48-year-old serving a life sentence for Ayia Napa’s quadruple murder.

Investigators have no witnesses or evidence identifying the attackers so far.

The attack took place at 5:40am last Friday, a few metres from the victim’s home in the Kokkines area.

According to police sources, statements will be taken in the next 24 hours from the brother at Central Prisons, as well as from other people.

Famagusta CID investigators are awaiting ballistic examination results on around 15 shell casings found at the scene, for two reasons: to establish whether two people were firing at the 33-year-old, and to determine the type of firearm or firearms used.

Investigators are also examining a stolen Volvo used by the attackers, which was found burned in the Avgorou area shortly after the attack.

Police are processing CCTV footage, though it has not yet yielded answers, given that the area is sparsely populated. The search continues for footage covering the attackers’ possible escape routes; investigators believe at least two people were involved.

The only certainty so far is that the attackers wanted the 33-year-old dead. He is active in the Ayia Napa area and survived what is described as a near-miracle, after most of the gunshots struck the right side of his vehicle. Investigators believe continuing to drive saved his life.

The attackers had hidden and waited for him. When he turned right, they opened fire.
