Athienou warns of protests if new crossings open without Pyroi checkpoint

Athienou residents are threatening strong action if any new crossing points are opened without including the Pyroi checkpoint.

The issue has resurfaced following the President’s meeting with the UN Secretary-General and Ersin Tatar in New York, where confidence-building measures and new crossing points were discussed.

A municipality-wide demonstration was initially planned for this Saturday but has been postponed following the arrangement of a meeting with President Christodoulides on 19 November. Mayor Kyriakos Kareklas told Phileleftheros that residents “will not accept the opening of any other crossing point unless it includes the Pyroi checkpoint”.

“The President has kept his promise so far. We don’t object to other crossings opening, but the Pyroi passage must open simultaneously. If it doesn’t, Athienou will revolt and take very dynamic measures”, Kareklas warned.

The mayor had previously written to the President on 15 October, seeking assurance that promises made to Athienou residents would be kept, emphasising that this is a humanitarian issue.

The demonstration has been postponed pending the outcome of the Presidential Palace meeting.
