President Christodoulides, has clarified that the Assistant Attorney General, Savvas Angelides, has not submitted his resignation, despite reports that Angelides had informed the President of a crisis within the Law Office due to issues of corruption and the influence of organised crime.

Speaking from Liopetri, President Christodoulides addressed the intensified rumours, which suggested Angelides felt he could no longer continue in his post under the current conditions. The President confirmed the final decision rests with the Assistant Attorney General himself: “You are asking me to comment on something that was never submitted to me.” Christodoulides added that he speaks with all officials about potential problems they may face.

The pressure on Angelides and the Law Office has been mounting due to several high-profile controversies, fuelling a crisis of public trust. This included the July 2025 ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which condemned Cyprus for its handling of a rape case involving a politician. The ECHR specifically criticised the language used in the decision to drop the prosecution, which conveyed prejudices and sexist stereotypes against the victim.

Furthermore, Angelides has been involved in a long-standing institutional feud with the former Auditor General over allegations of conflict of interest, specifically regarding claims that he halted criminal proceedings against former clients.
