Anti-flooding works worth €7m to protect Larnaca’s Kamares

A decade-long wait for flood protection in Cyprus’s second most vulnerable region is set to end, as the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (LDLGO) has announced the successful tender for anti-flooding works in the Kamares area.

The contract with the successful bidder will be signed on 18 November. “The project will take 30 months to complete and will significantly contribute to Larnaca’s flood protection”, LDLGO, the contracting authority, stated. The project is being funded by the state.

The troubled project has faced numerous obstacles since its announcement in 2015, following devastating floods in December 2014 that caused extensive damage and put residents at risk. Although the tender for construction plans was launched by the state in 2016, disputes with the successful bidder led to a six-year delay in completing the study.

The study was finally delivered in 2022, albeit incomplete, as it excluded certain works within Aradippou municipality boundaries. Following new floods in October 2022, the previous Cabinet allocated funds for the project, targeting a June 2023 start date.

The former Larnaca Sewerage Board, appointed as the contracting authority, launched a tender in January 2023 with an estimated cost of €4.1m. However, the sole bid received exceeded the estimated cost by €1.2m, prompting a re-tender with an increased budget.

The anti-flooding works, expected to cost approximately €7m, will include protective measures in the Kamares area, aimed at safeguarding residential zones in Larnaca and Aradippou municipalities within the Kalo Chorio river basin.
