Alexandros Jiang, originally from China, has become a Municipal Councillor of the Paphos Municipal Council, in the local government elections of June 9.
Jiang is a naturalised Cypriot citizen and he not only won one of the eight seats secured by DISY in the Paphos municipal elections but also topped the preference votes among all the elected members of all political parties and movements.
He received 1300 votes, the only one among all the elected members of the Paphos Municipal Council, along with the second in line, also from DISY, Linos Tsokkas, who surpassed the thousand-vote mark.
Apart from Jiang’s sweeping victory, two women candidates from AKEL and DIKO, respectively, made a remarkable debut in local politics.
Mariella Theophanous from AKEL and Agathi Savvidou from DIKO also entered the political arena of local government for the first time, managing to top the preference votes in their parties with relative ease.
In contrast, the first preference vote-getter in EDEK is a long-serving veteran of the Municipal House, geneticist Panagiotis Vorkas.
